Muddy Boots started at the back of a dairy farm in Madison County when the owner's freezer broke and she had too much milk, a commercial churn, and absolutely no plans to waste either of them. She made a batch of vanilla. Sold it at the end of the driveway. The sign was a piece of cardboard. The price was whatever felt right.
Five years later the cardboard sign is a truck and the flavors rotate with the seasons. The boots are still muddy. The milk still comes from down the road. And the price is still whatever feels right — which, for the record, starts at $3.50.
